born 1964 in Aachen, lives and works in Cologne

Achim Mohné's interdisciplinary, media-artistic research into the extension of photography and its paradigmatic change through digitality is constantly evolving with new media and their apparatuses. In multimedia installations, sculptures, performances, sound and video works, interactive 3D visualizations with augmented reality or in VR game engines, as well as sculptural translations between digital and real space, works in public space and publications, he calls for a critical distance to the authenticity of the post-photographic image. His complex interventions address media-immanent issues of surveillance, manipulability, artificial intelligence, and virtuality, and examine our interaction with the world in terms of pressing social, technological, geopolitical, ecological, or cultural issues, with a particular focus on nature and environmentalism.

Post-photographic research he also pursues in development and teaching, since 2017 as head of the 3D Research Department at ETH Zurich, since 2021 as interim professor of photography in the Department of Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund, where he was appointed as Professor for documentary photography & transmedia publishing in 2023. His artistic work is marked by numerous international awards and grants, research stays, lectures, teaching assignments and collaborations in interdisciplinary collectives. He has exhibited worldwide in institutions such as ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, HEK Basel, Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Eesti Kunstimuuseum Tallinn, Arts on Main Johannesburg, Ghetto Biennale Haiti, Center for Land Use Interpretation Los Angeles, and the University of São Paolo.

He studied at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne with Jürgen Klauke and VALIE EXPORT.
