ZU IHRER EIGENEN SICHERHEIT, 2000
Kunstraum Innsbruck
Curated by Maia Daminovic
1. At first the visitors discovered the monitor with a tiny 1,5 cm diagonal screen, showing a toilet of the gallery. A nearby small loudspeaker played sound that was picked up from this toilet.
2. The visitors’ reactions to this surveillance was, in turn, recorded on camera and broadcasted simultaneously to an out-of-the-way corner of the gallery and thus directly shown to other visitors.
3. The view into the toilet made clear that the image on the monitor stems from a filmed photograph of the gallery’s toilet, which had been installed on the inside wall of the toilet. But the original sounds (ventilation, flush) were indeed picked up and sent live to the loudspeaker at the miniature screen.
