On view: Utopia. The Right to Hope, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg 27. Sep 2025 – 11. Jan 2026
As part of the exhibition "Utopia. The Right to Hope" at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg Achim Mohné once again presents his work “DI_GI_TA_LIS” alongside the media performance “The_Vegan_Scanning_Printing_Cooking_Project”.
We are currently experiencing an unprecedented period of polycrisis on a global scale: In addition to wars, worldwide refugee movements, and a growing loss of faith in democracies, the man-made climate catastrophe dominates the thoughts and actions of many. Beyond cynicism and apocalyptic mood, however, it should be possible to live together in solidarity and community as a basis for civilizational and ecological survival. In the first two decades of the twenty-first century, it is primarily artists who take up such ideas in their works and advance the discourse on possible utopias.
The exhibition and publication project Utopia. The Right to Hope, initiated by the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, aims to give a sign of hope and confidence that a better and fairer life can be achieved for everyone on this planet. The aim is not to create a new grand design for the world, but rather to focus on a variety of micro-utopias that, when combined, can achieve something positive. For this reason, Utopia focuses primarily on works of art, but also on architectural projects, design objects, and examples from the applied arts that present utopian projects or ideas in various media.
At the exhibition opening, Achim Mohné presented his media performance for computers, scanners, printers, cooking utensils and the laid table.
Seasonal ingredients with an autumnal connection, such as pumpkin, root vegetables, chestnuts and other plants, were scanned in high resolution and then prepared by chef Lennart Röbbel into various vegan dishes like minestrone soup, pumpkin seed butter or chestnut pesto. Parallel to the culinary preparation, the plant scans were digitally processed on the computer, printed as contemporary still lifes and presented in the exhibition space as real pigment prints.
In his project, the artist focuses on the ethical and ecological dimensions of a vegan diet. Since meat consumption contributes significantly to global warming, Achim Mohné deliberately draws attention to the variety of edible plants that grow right on our doorstep and offer a culinary and ethically convincing alternative to meat and fish consumption.
The prints created during the performance are on display in the exhibition. A book about the project was published in 2020 by Hatje Cantz Verlag under the title ‘DI_GI_TA_LIS. A Plant Scan Project’.
